Kumu Hula Aunty Esther Ku’uleinani Correa started teaching hula in 1944 from her home in Kalihi, O’ahu, taught hula for Johnny Almeida’s dance troupe in Honolulu. Aunty moved the family to San Mateo, CA in 1960. She opened Ku’uleinani’s Hula Studio in San Mateo in 1961, teaching there until 1995 when she passed the hālau on to her daughter Renee Kuʻuleinani Price. Aunty soon after traveled just about around the world with Uncle Reggie. They uprooted and moved to Brentwood, CA where she taught seniors hula for 7 years. Today Aunty Esther is 94, she will join Kumu Renee’s hālau singing one of the mele. We are so proud to have he her as part if this year’s festival.
